Green morning smoothie

I'm trying to add more greens into my day, especially after how many sweets I had over the holidays. Aside from trying to make green juices for the morning when I have the time, I like adding in this green smoothie:

1 frozen banana

2 handfuls of frozen spinach (can use fresh but I freeze mine, so it lasts longer)

1 tbsp of raw organic honey

Chocolate protein powder

1 tsp of spirulina

It may seem like a random combo, but it is actually delicious. This smoothie kept me satiated for most of the morning to focus through my morning classes and not feel a rumbling stomach. Each ingredient in the smoothie also has great benefits:

Bananas: A great source of complex carbs, which most people think means lots of sugar, but since bananas also have a high fiber content, they have a lower GI index. They shouldn't spike your blood sugar the way people think sugar does, and they'll be great for energy in the morning.

Spinach: A great leafy veggie that is full of nutrients and can boost the immune system. It's also super hydrating, so another great way to start the morning because our bodies get dehydrated overnight.

Honey: Raw honey contains many antioxidants like flavonoids and phenolic acids. Honey's also a sweetener that won't affect blood sugar as much as regular sugar. With that being said it should still only be consumed in moderation.

Spirulina: This nutrient-rich superfood has naturally-occurring vitamins minerals, essential fatty acids, chlorophyll, and phycocyanin. It is a great antioxidant and has many anti-inflammatory properties. Its main active ingredient is phycocyanin which gives it a green color and can fight free radicals that promote inflammation. It also may lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels.
